My story

Alexia carrillo at the liberated mommy

Do you dream of a world where you can work with purpose but also be the mom you want to be?

Travel more? Enjoy more experiences as a family?  Heck. Even be able to take care of your kids when they’re sick and not worry about the sick leave you have to take.?

Hi. I’m Alexia, and this was me a few years ago. I’m going to tell you the story of why I decided to leave my career as a PhD scientist turned teacher to work from home mom and be with my son and how I did it.

Why I wanted to work from home

I had just finished graduate school with a PhD in cancer biology, and I honestly wasn’t sure that doing research in a lab was really right for me. After working in another research lab, I realized that I definitely wanted something where I could teach and help to have more direct impact on someone’s life.

When I got pregnant with my first child, we moved back to Nashville to be closer to my husband’s family. I found a job as a science outreach teacher where I was able to teach high school students advanced college-level material. I loved it. Being able to see the impact I was having on their learning and giving them confidence in themselves was so rewarding.

But when I had my son, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to leave him in the care of someone else 50 hours a week. Something about it just didn’t feel right to me.

How I decided what business to start

I knew there was the potential to make money online, so I set out to figure out what I could do with the skills, interest, and education I had.

I tried my hand at Etsy but quickly realized that I wasn’t confident enough in my creative ability to make that work.

Then I found an online course teaching about people selling on ebay. I had no idea people would actually buy things with the intention of selling them again.

I LOVED it.

It was so much fun to go to yard sales and thrift stores looking for items were valuable on ebay. I definitely loved the thrill of the hunt.

I hadn’t started ebay thinking I would be able to work from home doing it. It was mostly extra money to help me pay off debt to bring down my expenses so I could make it easier to afford to stay home.

Then I started seeing other ebay sellers on Instagram and Youtube talk about how they were selling $5,000 or $10,000 per month. That’s more than I was making at my full-time job!

This had the potential to be more than just a side hustle bringing in a little bit of extra money a month. This could be a legit business that could allow me to finally work from home.

Actually quitting my job to be a mom and entrepreneur full-time

I spent the next 2 years learning as much as I could about selling on ebay and building up my business while having my full-time job.

I spent a lot of time watching youtube videos from other resellers to learn how to turn my side hustle into a business.

I also used my commute (about an hour each way) to listen to podcasts on business, mindset and personal development to learn how to become a successful entrepreneur.

After having a side hustle for 2 years, I was able to build my business to the point where I could quit my full-time job.

In 2018, I did just that and became a full-time work at home mom in charge of my time, money and life.  Truly liberated from the 9-5.

I thought this was the final step. It was what I’d been wanting for so long. But little did I know, God had me on a journey bigger than I could even have imagined.

Reality Check on Being an Entrepreneur and Stay at Home Mom

After quitting my job, I quickly realized that this was not going to be as easy and carefree as I’d envisioned.

The sudden shift from being a working mom out of the home to being a self-employed entrepreneur at home with a toddler was nothing short of a culture shock.

I was met with an onslaught of emotions from fear around money to mom guilt for needing to put my son in daycare so I could actually get work done.

Lots of tears were met with doubt that I could actually do this.

But I knew that I wanted it so badly.

How God called me back to Him from my journey into new age thinking

So in an attempt to find peace and figure out why this was so hard for me, I dove into podcast after podcast from different entrepreneurs.

The one thing that stood out to me was my mindset.

I didn’t have the confidence that so many of these entrepreneurs were talking about.

I didn’t have this belief that everything was just going to work out and that whatever was on my heart was already done.

This stuff seemed too good to be true and also a little foolish if I’m honest. What if things don’t work out? There is risk in every choice and there are obviously better choices to be made most of the time (see the scientist in me talking haha).

And I dove more into this, I realized that these people were all talking about the same thing: law of attraction and manifestation (aka “woo woo” stuff).

I’d never heard of it before, but I was learning more and more. That’s when the red flags starting popping up.

Why don’t they mention God and keep saying “universe” or “source energy”?

It feels really self centered and self focused to just wish things to come to you like that.

And then the final straw was hearing about crystals.

No way. I KNOW that’s not anything God would want me to mess with.

So it was on that day in Fall 2019 that I opened my Bible (after finding it in a box in my closet) and started asking “What does God say about all of this?”

This started a journey that’s still going on today of me learning who God really is, what does He really want for us, and what is the Truth about our lives, our callings, purpose, business, money, and so much more.

A Biblical Mindset Changed Everything

Once I started to see what I was doing in the bigger picture of God’s calling on my life and the Kingdom, my perspective changed from worrying all the time and shaming myself for not having the job or the online business that was making 7 figures and seeing my own journey as one that was unique to me and where God wanted me.

I started enjoying time with my son more. I wasn’t stressed all the time because I knew that I was doing what God asked and that if something wasn’t happening as fast as I wanted it to, then I need to trust in God’s perfect timing.

I stopped worrying over whether my business would “work” and started trusting in my heart to serve others and God would bring the right people when the time was right for them.

It’s all about perspective and what matters most to you.

When it’s the world (i.e. success, fame, money, stuff), then yeah, being an entrepreneur is full of doubt and worry all the time. But when it’s on God (i.e. serve Him in all you do including being a mom, serve and love others, build wealth for the Kingdom and not because you want to buy a bunch of expensive stuff), then the worry, stress, and fear are minimal.

You’re not superhuman. So of course you still have emotions. But when you’re walking where God is calling, then that comes with a peace beyond all understanding.

How Mama With A Calling came to be

The more I dove into God’s word and the more my life was changing, the more I couldn’t deny what He was saying to me.

I just kept feeling this overwhelming desire to share these truths with other women.

That there’s more to business and life than the money we earn. That money isn’t bad. That we are worth so much more than our job, income, or success in this world.

As I kept seeing so many drawn into the new age thinking, even as Christians, I saw a lack of Biblical mindset teaching for entrepreneurs. They were hearing it all from these new age people but they weren’t hearing that God actually is the ultimate in mindset and that all the answers they’re looking for (and more!) are in the Bible, if we just look.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 and I saw so many losing their jobs or going to work despite their fear because they needed money, I knew that this was it.

God was calling me to pivot and not just teach moms how to quit their jobs. It was bigger than that.

I was being called to teach women that they have a calling, give them the confidence to pursue it, and empower them to put God at the focus of everything they’re doing, including running a business.

So the Mama With A Calling podcast was born.

I help moms follow God first in their life and business. Through Biblical truths, women develop a Biblical mindset to confidently pursue where God is calling them and never give up.

With coaching, courses, digital products, and more, I’m here to mentor you on this journey and show you what God truly wants for you as a Christian entrepreneur, mom, and woman of God.
